Double whammy for singletons in flats
9:46am Thu 10th Apr 08Regarding your report revealing the grossly disproportionate amount of water rate demands single person flat-dwellers are being subjected to (totally unrelated to the consumption thereof).
These in actual fact seem based on property values and general rates applicable in 1990 and any inaccuracies inherent in the system were obviously carried over into the then new council tax scheme and are now manifesting themselves with a vengeance!
Not only that but the fundamental built-in flaws that resulted from local estate agents seemingly basing their valuations on ‘frontage’ and the existing general rates appertaining at the time has led to the grotesque anomalies, now becoming all too visible in the current system.
Single person flat dwellers are being doubly disadvantaged with regard to council tax and water rate demands, which are desperately in need of correction in order to rectify this appalling ongoing social injustice!
Furthermore, I would point out another hideous anomaly – whereby ordinary basic twobedroom flats in this area were by some strange quirk of reasoning valued more highly than three bedroom semi-detached properties with independent access in the same vicinity. This led to the disproportionate unfairness we now find ourselves confronted with.
And whatever happened about environmentally green policies and water conservation when said single person households end up paying more owing to the defects which were built-in from the very outset!
Finally, the installation of water meters is not in many cases a practical proposition as, according to the authorities, those served by one main pipeline find that otherwise obvious solution ruled out – still leaving them seriously disadvantaged on both counts regarding water rates and council tax.
So the hideous unfairness continues apace and must be addressed to restore some semblance of fairness and social justice to the situation as this inequitable state of affairs has persisted for far too long.
