Support for Holyport Manor move

9:02am Fri 4th Apr 08

The Advertiser has dedicated many column inches to the group of Cox Green residents campaigning against the construction of the new Holyport Manor special school on the playing fields at Cox Green.

In the interests of balance, I would like to take the opportunity of using your Letters page to welcome Holyport Manor Special School to Cox Green and I write as a resident who will be directly affected by the construction of the new school as my house is adjacent to the playing fields.

Taking a longer term view, I believe that Holyport Manor will be an asset to Cox Green.
It will establish an educational centre of excellence in the area with the combination of Lowbrook Primary, Cox Green Comprehensive, the new special school and the community centre.

Over time, I believe it will even enhance property values in the area as it provides certainty to the future of the Cox Green campus.

There are legitimate concerns relating to traffic flows in Cannon Lane, particularly during peak commuter hours, and pedestrian access to the school.

None of these are insurmountable with the appropriate level of planning and investment by the local authority.  In particular, the one-way traffic flows over the bridge in Highfield Lane and under the bridge in

Cannon Lane need to be replaced and widened to make them capable of handling two-way traffic at all times.

This leaves one final question: is a name change planned for the special school when it is in Cox Green and no longer in Holyport?

  • Ian, thank you so much. It's nice to know not everyone is hostile in Cox Green! As Holyport Manor is well known in the area I hope the name will be retained. I'm still curious as to what the Council plans to do with the old site, however...Rachel Baxter
