Big firms must back green efforts of public

4:39am Fri 28th Mar 08:: written by John Laker

A moving message on the train's display told us that bicycles were not allowed to be carried on the train from 7.45 to 9.45am! Although the 9.29am train was relatively clean and comfy, dozens of passengers had to stand, as it was packed.

Having said that, the ticket cost of £13.40 for a Paddington/return journey, plus unlimited tube travel, seemed very reasonable!

I arrived at Earl's Court at 10.45am and visited the ‘Ecobuild exhibition’. There were many exhibitors and it was refreshing to see how many companies and organisations have positive, and often innovative, solutions to the problems of high energy and water use.

However, the exhibition area was heated to 23/24 degrees Celsius and walking around for a short time changed inspiration into perspiration!

So, in our attempts to promote energy reductions, working people wishing to continue their cycle riding in London are prohibited from doing so, the train company does not supply enough carriages so that all passengers can sit down while participating in an environment friendly trip and a exhibition dedicated to promoting the efforts of energy reducing companies is heated to a temperature far in excess of necessity.

Today, many people are trying to be ‘greener’ and are prepared to make sacrifices to achieve a sustainable future for future generations.

If only the large corporations that run our trains and exhibitions would take positive actions to supplement the individual’s attempts to reduce his or her carbon footprints!
