Tenants' anger as flats face bulldozer

Anxious tenants terrified of being turfed onto the street when their homes are bulldozed demanded answers at a meeting organised by housing association bosses.
Tempers flared last night over the fate of some people living in Toynbee Housing Association\\\'s 84 flats in Kidwells Close, which are earmarked for demolition in a few months' time because the 1968 properties don't meet Government standards.
The meeting at St Joseph's Church Hall was called to try and allay the fears of 29 assured shorthold tenants (AST) who will miss the cut for new homes when the blocks of homes are rebuilt.
It was revealed on the night that some of them would definitely not be rehomed by Toynbee.
Toynbee's housing list is currently closed so the AST's have been advised to re-register with the Royal Borough - and could face a five year wait for a home.
But Sue Needham, assistant housing services director at One Housing Group headed up the meeting and was joined by the company's development manager Luke Flaxington. Mr Flaxington said: "The idea is not that we kick people out on the streets. We are a housing association and we house people and it's not just a case of us wanting to get rid of you."
