Olympics park and ride scheme scrapped

The £19million Windsor park and ride scheme would have been built at South
Field, between Eton and Eton Wick, a greenbelt site owned by Eton College.
While one major aim was to ease
congestion in Windsor, the 900-space development
would also serve many of the 30,000 expected to visit Dorney Lake during the games.
More than 1,100 residents opposed
the plans, claiming it would ruin lives, damage the environment and bring huge
traffic problems and crime.
About 200 people squeezed into a
Royal Borough cabinet meeting at the Thames Valley Athletics Club, off Pococks
Lane, last night.
After a string of passionate
speeches, and with no alternative plan, the cabinet unanimously voted to throw
out the scheme.
Councillor Colin Rayner, member for
highways, transport and the environment, said the business case was
'unsound'.
The council also said funding for
the project, applied for by the previous Liberal Democrat administration, had
not been secured and that the Olympic Development Agency would only spend money
inside venues anyway.
