Blaze destroy's disabled couple's car

12:00am Thu 29th Jun 06

Greg, 44, who has multiple sclerosis and Yash, 47, who has polio are dependent on their car and wheelchairs to lead their busy lives and are mystified about the cause or reasons for the fire.
Yash, said: "The fire brigade said that there was a 90 per cent chance that it was arson and a 10 per cent chance that it was an electrical fault with the car.
"The car has been taken away to be checked and we're expecting to hear the results next week.
"All of the neighbours are disgusted that it's happened. If it is arson, of all the cars in the street, it's unbelievable that our car was picked on."
The Airths sleep at the back of their house and did not hear about the fire until it had been put out by firefighters.
Mrs Airth, said: "We're pleased that our neighbour noticed the fire and called them out.
"We have to park the car further along the street as there's not enough room in front of our house. We've had a few scratches on it before but nothing like this."
The wheelchair that was destroyed was Greg's and the couple are currently struggling to share Yash's wheelchair until they can claim for a new one on their insurance.
Speaking about their car Mrs Airth, said: "Motability were brilliant. Our car was taken away and we had a replacement to use by 11.45am on Saturday morning."
Both Greg and Yash are members of Wamdsad, the Braywick-based disabled sports association, and are largely responsible for founding and building up the association's golfing section.
Commenting on the fire Mike Davis, Wamdsad operations director said: "From our point of view it's a dreadful pity that their vehicle should be vandalised. It looks like it was arson which is just terrible."
