William Borlase crowned national champions

8:00am Thu 29th Apr 10

Sir William Borlase’s School’s under 14s hockey completed a sensational year by being crowned National Champions last week.

The youngsters, who had already been crowned County Champions and South of England champions this year, went into the event full of confidence.

They started in fine style on Wednesday with a 4-0 win against the Wirral School and a 5-0 drubbing of South Dartmoor.

On Thursday they started off with a 1-0 win against Rugby School before a 3-2 win against Bishop Stortford ensured they finished top of their group and reached the final, where they met Dean Close.

Borlase’s started in fine fashion, attacking well and defended superbly with Sam North and Josh Rollet particularly impressive.

Keeper Callum Haismann then had to be treated for five minutes after injuring himself while making a fine save to deny Dean Close an opening goal.

With neither side finding a breakthrough the game went to penalty flicks and Haismann was the hero, making three saves to give Borlase’s a 3-2 win and spark wild celebrations.
