Reading midfielder Brynjar Gunnarsson has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract with the club.

The 33-year-old, who has earned more than 60 caps for Iceland and worn the captain's armband for his country on many occasions, was out of contract this summer but has agreed to extend his time at Madejski Stadium for a further 12 months.

Since joining the Royals from Watford in the summer of 2005, he has started 71 games for the club, scoring 10 goals, and he will be an important part of Brendan Rodgers' first team squad for the new campaign.

His experience and talent will play a vital role, in tandem with a young squad, and director of football Nick Hammond is pleased to have him on board again, saying: "I'm very pleased that Brynjar has signed.

"He is a very good player, his quality gives him great versatility and he continues to set a good example for the younger players. He has a big part to play this season."

Gunnarsson added: "There was never any doubt, I always wanted to stay and the club wanted me so it was fairly easy to get everything done.

"It is a time when there are a lot of changes and some players were not offered contracts so I was very pleased the club wanted to keep me."
