House of Commons plea to save Cookham Road post office
12:00am Mon 10th Mar 08:: written by Claire Moulson
A petition opposing the closure of
Cookham
Road post office in Maidenhead has been presented to
the House of Commons by MP Theresa May.
The Conservative politician presented the 1,384-named document to the house on Thursday, March 6.
She said: "The petition of those concerned about post office closures in the Maidenhead constituency declares that the closure of the post office in Cookham Road would be an unacceptable loss to the local community, and pose serious difficulties for all the local people who rely on it.
"The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Secretary of State for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, to instruct the Post Office Ltd to keep open Cookham Road Post Office, and to listen to the views of the local people in respect of their objection to the closure of this vital part of the local community."
The branch is one of six post offices in the Maidenhead area listed for closure.
The deadline for the Royal Mail's consultation into the proposed closures ended yesterday.

- As the consultation is now underway, each post-office is now in the hands of the Post Office and whether each argument justifies the means. We on the Bridge Road Parade had 1743 signatures and have argued like Theresa May, that the closure would be a "unacceptable loss to the community" and argued with facts, such as density, population, upcoming developments, business placement and without doubt community spirit. So we wait with antisipation for the results.
