Car smashed through riverside railings

12:00am Thu 10th Jan 08:: written by Luke Cross

A car was left hanging off the road by the River Thames last night after ploughing through the barrier after a collision with another vehicle.

Ray Mead Road was closed after the incident opposite The Thames Hotel at about 7.10pm yesterday.

Passers by, onlookers and motorists rushed to the aid of a woman and a man during the collision between a black Toyota 4x4 and a Mercedes, but there were no injuries.

Police said the car was partially 'hanging' over the river bank after hitting the railings, which looks over decking and boats below.

The Mercedes was removed by 8.25pm and the road reopened at about 8.30pm.
