Brothel paid VAT

11:58am Wed 30th Jul 08:: written by Court reporter

A brothel madam who registered her Dorney-based business with the Inland Revenue and paid more than £100,000 in tax, has been spared prison.

Tina Emberton attempted to register her business as 'Chantal's Brothel' before it was shut down by police as part of a nationwide crack down on vice dens.
In just over six months the VAT-registered business paid in an estimated £100,000 in deductions, even though it was illegal to run such a venture.

The 35-year-old of Coniston Avenue, Headington, Oxford, admitted managing the brothel between March and September 2006.

At Reading Crown Court on Friday she was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years and was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and pay costs of £475.
