Decision on council strikes pending

6:00am Thu 26th Jun 08:: written by Justin Burns

Bin men and traffic wardens are amongst workers across the Royal Borough who could down tools for two days next month.

Key services face disruption after members of UNISON, the public sector workers' union members proposed to strike in a national row over pay.
The trade union's local government negotiators have recommended that workers protest for 48 hours between July 16-17. UNISON voted to action after they rejected a 2.45 per cent pay offer from the Government and wants a six per cent rise for workers, or an extra 50p per hour.

Royal Borough council employees who are members of the public sector trade union, are due to hold a crunch meeting tomorrow at the town hall, to decide on action whether they will join walkout.

School dinner staff, refuse collectors, classroom assistants, social workers, housing benefit staff, cleaners, architects and traffic wardens could be some of the 500 Royal Borough workers involved.

Bill Rolfe, UNISON representative in the Royal Borough, said: "
If there was action in the Royal Borough, there will be picket lines at the town hall and other work places.
"It is a personal issue for members. The strike is looking like a reality at the moment, but is the last thing that anybody wants to do."
