Euro 2008: Poland can't handle former son Podolski

10:46am Mon 9th Jun 08:: written by Nick Meakin

Poland, the Tiser's adopted team for Euro 2008, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Germany in their opening match last night.

Two goals from Polish born Lucas Podolski gave the pre-tournament favourites a comfortable victory, but Poland coach Leo Beenhakker said the result would not damage his players' confidence, with matches against Austria and Croatia still to come.

"Everybody was upset about the result and not happy, but we are still in the tournament and that's what it's all about," he said.

"We have three or four days to recover physically and mentally and it's part of being a professional.

"Everybody is a bit upset now. On Monday we will see how the team is, then we will start up again. Knowing these guys are mentally strong and against Austria, they will be ready."
