Poor weather conditions could not stop young golfer Tom Wilde claiming the Castle Royle men’s club championship.

Played over two testing days last weekend, Wilde shot rounds of 75 and 70 for a one over par total of 145.

Wilde’s total pushed him six shots clear of his nearest challenger, ex-Maidenhead club champion Nick Scrutton, who carded rounds of 77 and 74. Rob Pennel also recorded rounds of 76 and 75 to finish on 151.

Pennel got some consolation in winning the handicap section with a nett 141 from Peter Kelly (74/72) and Russ Barber (74/72) who both had totals of 146.

• Following the success of the inaugural search for Club Steward of the Year in 2007, the race is on to find the club steward or a bar person at the 19th hole who provides the most welcoming and enjoyable experience for golfers.
