Shake up at St Mark's Hospital

3:46pm Fri 23rd May 08:: written by Luke Cross

A minor injuries unit is on its way to St Mark’s Hospital this summer thanks to a strong campaign by Maidenhead.
Berkshire East Primary Care Trust’s board agreed the move for a pilot scheme today after they received a 3,000-strong petition, part of the Who Cares Wins campaign led by the Advertiser and MP Theresa May.
It would be subject to review every three months with the option to shut it if deemed not viable.
The pilot is scheduled to run until March 2009, when a full evaluation will take place.

But in a controversial move, beds at the Charles Ward at St Mark's Hospital, Maidenhead, which has the capacity for 20 patients with dementia and Alzheimer's, are to be moved to Slough’s Upton Hospital, the PCT has announced.

Kevin Lewis, director of strategic planning at Berkshire Healthcare Trust, said the move will mean the service can work more effectively and with more ‘clinical flexibility’ from one place.

But some have already expressed upset at the plans, branding it 'inconvenient and a 'life change'.
