Labour take the reins in Slough

4:56pm Fri 2nd May 08:: written by Gareth McPherson

Labour have swept to power in Slough after four years in the wilderness.
In a result that bucks the national trend the Labour Party gained five seats against the ruling coalition party, made up partly of Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Liberals.
Signs of the turning tide emerged when Labour’s Cippenham Green candidate Roger Davis stole the seat from UKIP member Geoff Howard by 529 votes.
Labour stronghold Cippenham Meadows was staunchly defended by May Dodds and misery was compounded for the coalition when Tory leader Dexter Smith was removed by Labour's James Walsh in Colnbrook with Poyle.
Next to go was Mohammed Aziz, the town’s deputy mayor, who lost his Central ward seat amid allegations of electoral fraud in last year’s round, but it was too late to remove him from the ballot paper.

Haymill councillor Richard Stokes, former leader of the council, was sad to see the coalition suffer defeat.
But he said: “This is something we can recover from.”
Labour now have 23 councillors sitting on Slough Borough Council, to the coalition’s 18.
