Cashpoint scammers return

1:00pm Fri 18th Apr 08:: written by Gareth McPherson

Cashpoint scammers have returned to Maidenhead town centre.

Nationwide has confirmed a skimming device was found attached to the cashpoint outside its High Street branch on March 13.

The device would have been used to copy customers' card details and used to siphon funds from accounts.

The town has been targeted before and a Nationwide spokesman, confirming the discovery of the latest device, said Maidenhead was recognised by cashpoint crooks as a prime spot.

“Maidenhead is an affluent area so like a lot of places around London it has greater appeal to fraudsters than less prosperous towns," she said.

One Nationwide customer said that she had been caught up in the latest scam, with two of her family having a total of £4,000 swiped from their accounts.

  • I would find this article much more helpful if it told me how to recognise a skimming device, and had a photograph of one attached to a cashpoint.Mark

  • With the level of CCTV in the town, combined with the knowledge that this has happened before at Nationwide, isn't it obvious that absolutely nothing is being done to deter the criminals or try to remedy the situation. Typically people learn from their mistakes but in this instance it seems that Banks know that regardless of whether they secure their machines or not people will still use them and so to hell with it, they won't do anything.
