No more ugly metal at the riverside

12:00am Thu 24th May 07

Quite apart from any health concerns which may or may not be real, the siting of yet another piece of metallic equipment being erected in the area fills me with despair.
At the entrance to the town over Maidenhead Bridge I have today counted 62 pieces of metal structure within a 100-metre distance of the roundabout on the western side alone. This figure consists of lamp posts, road signs, business signs, 80 metres of railings, garage signs, advertising signs, bus stops, bollards, directional signs not to mention an electricity board substation.
The approach to the town within the riverside area is already a mass of mostly unattractive sometimes confusing metallic hardware.
Why add to all this with yet another unattractive 15-metre high metal construction with shrouded antenna and associated equipment cabinets?
If the intention is to make Maidenhead a more attractive town for visitors and enhance the beauty of the riverside area by means of ideas outlined in the recently published Maidenhead future plan, then this is surely not the way to start going about it.
