Sainsbury's opens its doors
12:00am Thu 15th Mar 07
Shoppers eagerly waited for the doors to open as officials and dignitaries swarmed around the entrance of the Providence Place store.
At 9am the Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead, Cllr Margaret Cubley, cut the ribbon to loud whoops and cheering before the throng poured into the pristine supermarket.
Single mum-of-two Jo Agnew was the first customer through the doors. The 34-year-old Ray Mill Road West resident, who had cat food, instant coffee and biscuits on her shopping list, said: "I think it's absolutely fantastic. It's so big."
Pensioner Rosemary Saunders has keenly followed the project. The 75-year-old Coln Close resident took numerous pictures of the construction. She said: "I don't know what to buy. There's so much."
Store manager Nick Smith has been waiting nearly two years to see the radical changes realised, including a piazza, coffee shop and several specialist counters.
He said: "It's been a long time coming but it's been worth the wait. Now it's all about giving the customers what they want. As a flagship store we'll be testing all Sainsbury's newest products first."
