Weary Banker by Credit Crunch romped to victory in the big race of the day as rain lashed across Burnham Park for the Burnham Donkey Derby on Saturday.
It was a bad day for the bookies as takings at the tote tent were down but huge crowds of hardy souls did pull on a rain jacket to cheer on the hairy mares and their jockeys.
"We have had a really good crowd in spite of the weather," said Mike Mills chairman of the donkey derby committee. We have been here 19 years now so people still support us."
New attractions this year included a 30ft climbing wall which children clambered up and down all day, but the maypole dancing and gymnastics display fell victim to the weather.
The 19th donkey derby was officially opened just after midday by Rotary president Craig Edwards alongside Rotary member and town crier Neil Smith, who was with mascot Dynamite the Donkey.
An estimated 2,000 racegoers gallantly got on with enjoying their day, despite the occasional drenching, and they were rewarded with six top class donkey races and a performance from the Annabelle Watson Dancers.
Staff from the Advertiser were at the event handing out editions of our new Burnham Advertiser to passers-by.
