4:20pm Thu 28th Jan 10:: written by Dan Darlington

A shopkeeper was injured when hammer-wielding robbers broke into a post office in Hurst this morning.

Devinderjit Sandhu was hit on the head with a hammer as two robbers struck at the Hurst Post Office and Village Stores in the Street at 4am and his wife was also subjected to violence during the raid in which cash was stolen.

Mr Sandhu was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and is now back home.
His nephew Gurdiv Sandhu said: "It is very traumatic, my whole family has been in shock."

Det Sgt Carl Bradford, of Loddon Valley CID is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
He said: "This type of offence is rare in this area, and I would like to reassure the public a full investigation is underway.

It is the second time in a year that the shop has been targeted by robbers. In February last year, Mr Sandhu bravely fought off armed raiders who tried to rob his store.

Call police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
