Musical Monsters

7:00am Mon 19th Nov 07

Following the enormous success of The Gruffalo and The Snow Dragon, Tall Stories return to Norden Farm Centre for the Arts this Christmas with an exciting new show, writes Lucy Jones.

Monster Hits tells the tale of an imaginative young boy called William who visits his grumpy, unlikeable grandfather for the weekend.

William is kept up at night by some strange sounds coming from the cupboard and he soon discovers two colourful musical monsters. But will his Grandpa be able to see them or not?

Through direct story-telling and silly songs, Tall Stories’ shows have enraptured and delighted audiences nationwide but it is the story itself which is the key element to the success of the show.

Toby Mitchell, creative producer of Monster Hits and co-founder of Tall Stories, said: “A good story is of primary importance. It keeps the audience on the edge of their seat.
“The secret is not to produce children’s theatre but to produce theatre that parents and teachers will enjoy as well. The kind of shows we would like to go and see ourselves.”

The recipe is certainly working as Tall Stories celebrates its 10th birthday this year with a dazzling cluster of much-loved shows under the belt.

Most shows come from existing fairytales or stories but Monster Hits was specially written by the company and has already received glowing reviews.

“Everyone has fun,” said Mr Mitchell. “It’s a big, silly, lively story with a genuine heart. It’s also a story of reconciliation and friendship.
“The show is for ages three upwards but my 18-month old son watched it four times in Edinburgh and was joining in by the end.”

It is the fifth Christmas show for Tall stories at Norden Farm. Annabel Turpin, centre director, said: “Tall Stories consistently raise the bar.”

To witness the alternative offering to the traditional pantomime this Christmas see Monster Hits at the theatre in Altwood Road, Maidenhead from December 5-29.
