Khan believes first win is just around the corner

Ricky Khan is adamant Maidenhead RFC’s first win of the season is just around the corner following their plucky display against Bournemouth on Saturday, which earned them a long overdue losing bonus point.

Winless Maids competed with Bournemouth for the full 80 minutes and had a late chance to snatch a draw, but had to settle for their first bonus point since the second game of the season.

It was a performance which gives head coach Khan much encouragement ahead of Saturday’s tough trip to Reading.

“It’s coming, it’s coming,” he stated. “I was really pleased with the performance, but disappointed with the result. We could have won it.

“As far as the performance is concerned it was probably one of the best this season.

“You could say it was the one that got away. Bournemouth are a good side and we showed we can compete in this league.

“We’ve got a young squad, but when it comes good we’ll see some good results.”

Khan, who also coaches at London Wasps Academy, saw plenty more positives in the match than negatives and believes his side are finally finding their feet in National 3 South West.

“There are definitely more positives than negatives to take from the game,” he said.

“The set piece worked better, but there were times when we didn’t make the one-on-one tackles.

“The morale is pretty upbeat and the guys are working hard. It shows in the fact we came back from 10-0 after 10 minutes to finish 34-27. We gave the supporters a good game to watch.”

He added: “We now need to move on to Reading this week. I don’t expect it to be easy, we need to expect a physical battle.”

Ryan Long and Simon Standfast are doubts for the trip to Reading.

Kick-off will be at 2pm.
