Speed cameras should stay

Speed cameras should be retained in the Royal Borough, cabinet members agreed on Thursday night.

This comes despite an independent report which has gone before councillors branding speed cameras in the borough as ineffective.

Cllr Liam Maxwell (Con, Eton and Castle) supported the recommendation to keep the cameras saying they do seem to have some impact on driver's speed.

Cllr Simon Dudley (Con, Maidenhead Riverside) said if they could save 'just one child's life' they were worth keeping.

A report by a Slough electronics engineer commissioned by the ruling Tory party says that the 33 cameras in the borough, of which 18 are in Maidenhead, do not help reduce road safety or reduce the number of accidents.

  • I don't buy the "save just one child's life" line. Surely the best way to save children's lives is to use the money available in the most effective way. For example, if your budget is £500k, then you shouldn't spend it on something that will save one life. You should spend it on something that will save lots of lives. So, if speed cameras are ineffective, use that money on something effective instead.Rob

  • I don't understand why this debate continues to rumble on. The DfT’s figures are now in the public domain, study after study shows cameras don’t work and all those counties with the highest numbers of speed cameras are all officially in the top six worst for crashes, while those who refused cameras and continued to do the job properly maintain vastly superior casualty reduction results. They can’t hide anymore, so why are we still wasting column inches on what should be a dead story?Steve
