Celtic defender Darren O'Dea has joined Reading on loan until January 1.

O'Dea is 22-years-old and can play at either centreback or left back. He has captained the Republic of Ireland under 21s on a number of occasions and has also been included in Giovanni Trapattoni's full squad.

He is highly rated at Parkhead and has just signed a new three-year contract with Tony Mowbray's side.

O'Dea has played 31(+19) games for the Scottish giants, scoring five goals. He has lined up in the Champions League against the likes of AC Milan, Manchester United and Arsenal, while also picking up an SPL winner's medal.

Royals boss Brendan Rodgers said: "Darren is a very talented young defender and I think he will do really well for us. I'm delighted to bring in a player of his quality. I have known him since he was 14 and tracked his career since.

"He has just signed a new deal at Celtic and was very keen to come here and play. A number of clubs were chasing him and for him to choose us is great.

"He will be looking to get more games under his belt, but he also has good experience, including games in the Champions League. He has also been a captain at Celtic; a massive club with a rich history."
