Councillors agree to fight 'shameful' almshouse move

The mayor will put his weight behind the campaign to save the Jesus Hospital almshouse in Bray after councillors branded the proposed transfer as 'shameful'.

A motion urging the Royal Borough to oppose the controversial transfer was unanimously agreed at last night's full council meeting held at Windsor Guildhall.

Letters objecting to the controversial plans will be written by the mayor, Cllr Jesse Gray, and sent to the Lord Mayor of the City of London, the Master Fishmonger, the chairman of the Charities Commission and the chairman and vice chairman of the Livery Committee.

Bray councillor Leo Walters, who proposed the motion, said: "We need to take action."

The Fishmongers Company, trustee of the 400-year-old almshouse in Bray High Street, has revealed plans to transfer the 17 homes to Bristol Charities.
The organisation, which wants to sell the historic site, says the property is no longer fit to provide accommodation for older people.

The Save Jesus Hospital action group is forging ahead with its new website www.savejesushospital.org.uk and banners have now been put up in Bray.
