Famous faces back Almshouse residents' campaign

8:02am Thu 11th Jun 09:: written by Justin Burns

A campaign to save the Jesus Hospital almshouse in Bray is gathering pace with high-profile faces from the village backing the bid.

The likes of top chef Michel Roux and his wife Robyn, and celebrity Rolf Harris have given their support to the campaigners.

Three hundred leaflets have been distributed in the last week to householders and businesses within the parish of Bray, as organisers step up their efforts to save their historical homes.

Posters are set to go up in shops and other public areas in Bray and Maidenhead tomorrow, (Friday) and an online petition has so far collected 118 signatures.

The Fishmongers Company, who are the trustees of the almshouse have announced plans to shut the building which dates back to 1628, saying it is not fit to provide accommodation for older people.

When the Jesus Hospital is sold, residents would be moved to temporary accommodation, before a new almshouse is bought or built with the money from the sale.

  • Why are the Fishmongers treating elderly people in this manner? There is something very fishy about this!! Why have they not approached the local council to take over the building?, Bray residents beware! you could be in for some major redevelopment in your village if the Jesus Hospital goes onto the open market even though it is a Grade I listed building.Make sure you get behind these residents and give them your full support.Frances Edwards
