Ex-Nortel employees plan more protests

4:23pm Tue 26th May 09:: written by Sonia Kapur

Campaigning ex-Nortel employees are preparing to stage a fresh protest on Friday.

The former workers of the telecommunications giant, which has its European headquarters in Maidenhead, were laid off two months ago without warning or redundancy pay.

They are now fighting for their rights and will picket the London and Belfast offices of administrator Ernst & Young.

A statement released by the group of campaigners today, said: "Two months later Nortel still continues to trade and is paying bonuses to staff and managers despite dismissing UK staff without statutory consultation."

The Advertiser reported in March that company fat cats had raked in $23m worth of bonuses the week before 100 Maidenhead staff were axed.

Leaders from union Unite will join forces with the former employees in the protest this week. The action follows a picket outside the offices in Maidenhead Office Park, two weeks ago. Click here to see our video report of their last protest.
