Williams ready to burst onto boxing scene

Meet Dan Williams: 6ft 5ins and 131/2 stone of pure muscle, and all at the tender age of 13.

The young Fifield boxer is a giant of an athlete for his age, so much so that it is proving difficult to find an opponent willing to go toe-to-toe with him in the ring.

Williams, a pupil of Cox Green School, currently spars with 20-year-old men, such is his physical stature.

Following on from a line of family boxers, the teenager, who trains at Bracknell Boys BC and Gallery Gym in Windsor, is preparing for his first competitive fight.

His coach, Dave Alloway, is hoping to find an opponent by the end of May.

“There are opponents out there for him,” said Alloway, a Great Britain coach.

“I’m hoping he should have his first competitive bout by the end of May/start of June.

“He’s a big lad for his age and there’s not many out there, but we’re prepared to travel.

“But I’m 90 per cent sure he’ll box in a competition before the end of the season.”

Alloway admits that when Williams’ dad, Phil, first called he struggled to believe Dan was only 13.

“When his dad phoned and told me about him I didn’t believe him, but when he walked through the door I saw how big he is,” said Alloway.

“Since he’s been with us he’s been training two days a week. He’s a fitness fanatic.

“He’s got all the attributes: height, weight, reach and he’s still filling out. He will easily be a heavyweight or super-heavyweight.

“He’s sparring with men and holding his own. He’s got a bright future.”

Williams, who trains nearly every day of the week, has put boxing ahead of everything else in his life.

He admits that his size will give him an advantage in the ring and is hoping he can achieve big things: “Hopefully I can go to the Olympics then turn pro and win the world title,” he stated.
