Derelict stables in Larchfield were ravaged by fire yesterday afternoon causing police to investigate the incident as arson.

It took three fire engines and around 15 firefighters using jets and hose reels to put out the blaze in Harvest Hill Road, Maidenhead which took hold after 3pm.

Crowds flocked to witness the inferno but no-one was injured and the fire did not spread as feared.

Neighbour Dennis Pillinger, who lives opposite the scene, said the flames engulfed the building and shot dozens of feet into the sky. "They were the biggest flames I had ever seen," he said.  The whole thing went up in just five minutes and the flames were licking away full intensity for the best part of an hour."

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said that the incident was being investigated as arson. Call police on 0845 8505505 or anonymously on 0800 555111 with information.
