Burnham waiting on decision from manager elect

8:00am Thu 13th Nov 08:: written by Steve Spencer

There should be a new man at the helm of Burnham in time for Saturday’s visit of Gosport Borough.

Blues chairman Malcolm Higton has offered the job to his top candidate and should hear today (Thursday) if he has accepted the role.

“I’ve offered someone the job and I’m discussing terms with him at present,” revealed Higton. “I would hope this person is in place by the weekend.”

His arrival can come no sooner for Burnham after they suffered yet another crushing defeat on Tuesday, losing 6-0 at home to North Leigh.

“It was as bad a performance as I’ve ever witnessed in my time here,” stated Higton. “Taking nothing away from North Leigh, there were individual errors which cost us six goal. If you play like that you don’t win football matches.”

He continued: “I’ve had three players ring me up today (Wednesday) apologising for their performance.

“I’ve taken the role of manager on my shoulders but it’s a long time since I’ve managed.

"When I managed, the side had a lot of experience and they could grasp whay you wanted better. At Burnham we have a young side and it's harder."

What is further deepening the situation at the Gore is Higton's inability to make wholesale changes to the squad because of the imminent arrival of a new manager. The club have, however, brought in Jermaine Gumbs and Glenn Harris, but no further additions will be made.

"What we need is a change of personnel," stated the chairman. "I've had 11 players wanting to join us, but the manager will have to decide on it when he arrives because it's his team.

"My hands are tied behind my back."
