Jets need to turn corner

4:23pm Thu 30th Oct 08:: written by Steve Spencer

A corner needs to be turned by the Slough Jets if they are to mount a serious challenge to EPL leaders Guildford Flames this season.

After a surprisingly victorious start to the campaign where Slough showed that they are still a force to be reckoned with, the have Jets slipped into the bottom four following a number of defeats.

On Saturday night though, many Jets fans would not have been mistaken for thinking Steve Moria’s side had turned that proverbial corner with an 8-0 demolition of Warren Rost’s Romford Raiders.

But they were to be proved so wrong on Sunday and Wednesday night as the Jets fell to consecutive 4-2 losses and currently sit midtable.

“I thought we’d turned a corner,” explained head coach Moria. “We  beat Romford and outshot Peterborough Phantoms but couldn’t score against them. It was so one-sided in our favour. Despite the loss we were in good shape and I was hoping the run would continue into the Swindon game but we were just awful.”

He added: “We’re struggling at the moment. We’ve got guys who aren’t scoring like they have been in the past.

“Last night (Wednesday) there was no direction and we didn’t really drive at their net.”

It seems that if the Jets are to get back on track they must convert their attacking drives against the big teams in the league, instead of relying on picking up victories against the strugglers.

This weekend will offer Slough the chance to test themselves in a double-header against leaders Guildford.

However, are back-to-back games with the league’s form team really what the Jets need at this moment in time?

“I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing,” Moria said. “It’s a situation where we’re expected to do badly, but we can beat anyone on our day and I think we could this weekend.

“Our schedule has been tough but it gets tougher this week. We need to win hockey games but we’re not playing good hockey right now.”

All eyes turn to Guildford versus Slough this weekend.
