Glewis trains the next generation of boxers

Dave Glewis first started boxing at the tender age of nine and now more than 50 years later he has now fulfiled his dream and set up his own boxing club.

The 63-year grandfather is now the proud head coach of Jubilee Boxing Club that meet every week at the Haymill Centre in Burnham.

Despite being the driving force behind the project, the former welter-weight who hung up his gloves when he was 27, is quick to divert focus on the boxing itself.

“It is something that I have always wanted to do and has been a dream of mine for many years, but it’s much more important to talk about the club.

“We had an open day in July and since then word has spread and now we get 32 kids to our sessions and there are another 20 on our waiting list.

“We’ve also got 15 seniors who train with us.”

Two weeks ago the club were represented in the ring for the very first time and came away with two wins out of two when cousins Henry and Ryan Edmunds were victorious in their bouts.

“It was a great start for the club,” Glewis commented.

“They’re both good boxers, and I should know, Ryan is my grandson!”

The family theme runs strongly through the Jubilee club and along with Ryan, who lost his second fight in Newbury on Saturday to a controversial points decision, Glewis’ other grandson George Clark is also a member and his debut fight ended more positively in a well earned win.

On top of the two young fighters, Henry’s mum, Theresa, is the club’s welfare officer and her husband Steve is the assistant coach.

“Boxing has always been in my family,” Glewis commented. “And when the opportunity came up for the club, my wife was the first to tell me to do it.

“It’s great that my grandsons enjoy the sport and they’re not doing too badly.”

Formerly a coach at Slough and Marlow, Glewis has a wealth of experience and is hopeful that some of his fighters will go on to fight at the higher levels.

“I’d say I’ve got three seniors that are quite promising and we’ve got some young lads who are very raw and have never fought before but could be very interesting to work with.

“But it takes a long time to get them ready to fight and we don’t put them in the ring until we know that they are ready.”
