GIG REVIEW: First Ignition night at new Firestation Arts, Windsor

10:04am Mon 8th Sep 08:: written by Tom Putnam

This was the first musical event for the Firestation, formerly known as the Windsor Arts Centre. Whilst the official opening is on September 12, it could be believed that this evening had more importance if the Firestation wished to introduce themselves in a loud manner, writes Tom Putnam.

Reading outfit, The Race, wasted no time in getting comfortable. Lead singer Dan Buchanan proved to be animated in a refreshingly unpretentious fashion. Once they were finished they had set a respectable par for the main act of the evening.

Sennen began with a thunderous soundclash which quietened the room.  This was a good start although after a while it had become apparent that their lengthy brand of post modern rock was in the wrong place. This wasn’t to say that the crowd were not enjoying their set, but an awkward and empty semi circle occupied the front of the stage.

The night as a whole was a success.

In recent years Windsor has not had much of a music scene. As a result, local music lovers have been forced to become cynical when the topic of live bands in their town ever surfaces.  However, this evening had given one or two cynics a little optimism.
It had also given Ignition! a nice benchmark to work on. I wish them luck.

  • I think the music scene in Winsdor is picking up!! Live bands are regularly put on at the Old Ticket Hall, Havanas and the other resteraunts in the town, although the return of the arts centre (I mean Firestation ;) is more than welcome!Dan

  • You're right Dan. There seems to have been a more valid effort this year in contrast to the past few years, especially from Havanas and the Ticket Hall. When meeting one of the directors of the new Firestation I made the suggestion that the different establishments play off each other. Whether they shall or not is entirely up to them. However, whilst things in Windsor are going in the right direction. There is still a small way to go before it'll be taken seriously.Tom Putnam

  • I would just like to congratulate the Firestation on a really terrific first season! I have really enjoyed the variety of music that has been put on as well as the comedians and clubs available. Therefore I must establish that in my opinion The Firestation will be around for a long time! Hollie Weaver
