Tough action on employing illegal workers

5:35pm Tue 24th Jun 08:: written by Luke Cross

Employers who take on illegal workers will be named and shamed in a new Home Office clampdown.

The moves come as part of the Government's 'Enforcing the Deal' plans.
Just two weeks ago the Home Office swooped on Smiths News, in Whitby Road, Slough and found eight illegal workers and said the company could face £80,000 of fines.

The UK Border Agency website will now list companies or people who are prosecuted for employing illegal workers.

About 7,500 officers and staff are also being reorganised into local immigration teams.
There will also be automatic deportation for serious offenders and new partnerships with local authorities and enforcement agencies.

Details about people convicted for immigration offences will also be shared through a database with over 270 financial service, telecoms and utility companies, to assist them in tackling fraud.
Home secretary Jacqui Smith said newcomers must 'work hard, play by the rules and earn their right to stay.'
