Tributes to 'modern day suffragette' Val Price

A much loved campaigner whose support for other women ranged from founding a hostel for battered wives in Slough to mentoring future MPs, has died. Bournemouth born Val Price, who was 67, moved to Cippenham in Slough after marrying her husband Fred - later living in Kenneally and Alma Road, Windsor. She was a founder member of Slough Women's Aid a hostel for battered women and their children, helping establish two houses for use as hostels. She worked with it for seven years, on a 24 hour rota, taking phone calls and often going out at night to help women who had called her with no-one else to turn to. In the 1970s she managed the amazing feat of being elected to Windsor and Maidenhead Borough Council as a Labour member. Later she was parliamentary candidate for the Labour party in Windsor and Maidenhead. She and Fred left Windsor 14 years ago to live in Oaksey, Wiltshire where she chaired the women's committee in North Wilts Labour party. Speaking at her funeral in Swindon Crematorium last week Anne Snelgrove - MP for Swindon South - said: "There are many Labour women MPs who owe their place in the House of Commons largely due to Val's belief in us. It is now no longer possible for any major political party to neglect women as future MPs thanks in great part to Val, a modern day suffragette."
Val had been suffering from cancer since last year and died peacefully at home. She leaves her husband Fred, son David, daughter Juliette and four grandchildren.
An online guest book has been set up for people who want to pay tribute to Val Price.
