"People scared to walk home"

12:00am Thu 1st Mar 07

He was taken to Wexham Park and was still unconscious in the intensive care unit on Tuesday morning.
Amanda Curran, 32, who owns a shop on the High Street, was disgusted by the attack. She said: “A lot of us are at the end of our tether and talking about leaving.
“This weekend, a 14-year-old boy got mugged, a taxi driver was attacked and a man was beaten up so badly he’s still unconscious.”
Residents say despite a dispersal order, gangs of youths gather in Burnham in the evenings and weekends and the situation is getting out of control.
Ms Curran said: “There are up to 40 yobs here every night and people are scared to walk home. It’s getting to a point now where the police don’t seem to do anything, even though there’s a dispersal order.”
Other business owners in the High Street have said they are too scared to speak out because they fear retaliatory attacks. One man, who did not want to be named, said he heard of five other attacks at the weekend, including two on teenage boys.
But Chief Inspector George Wrigley, the South Bucks police area commander, said the dispersal order was effective. He said: "The dispersal order has been a success and has allowed us to manage the problem and arrest, fine and caution several trouble makers in Burnham."
