Store no holy grail

While I agree with your reader Janice Nattress’s sentiment in respect of ‘reviving Maidenhead before it’s too late’, is the addition of a department store really the solution?

The construction of more monolithic rows of clone shops is a form of cultural vandalism and an irritating reminder how a few businesses dominate our lives.

Encouraging the return of smaller one-off enterprises with a mixture of affordable rents, free parking and the creation of a unique atmosphere seems a sensible way of lifting us out of this retail nadir.
