Mistakes of past will be slums of future

10:46am Thu 3rd Jul 08

I have just read in the local paper Maidenhead Library is apparently a listed building.

Forgive me, I may not know the facts but this building is a fairly new one. I remember this library being built about 40 years ago. I also remember the beautiful old library that was there before this one. How can a modern building be categorised as a listed one?

So many of Maidenhead’s beautiful old buildings were knocked down in the Sixties and Seventies without a thought for the future and replaced; now many of those new buildings have also been knocked down. Have we lost the plot here?

We can all see that the majority of the new buildings going up will be the slums of tomorrow. I also have read that Maidenhead is going to get a facelift in the town centre with the removal of chewing gum, and loose paving bricks will be replaced and made secure.

Why have we had to wait until now? These bricks have been a danger for years in some places. Talking of a danger to the public, why is no one stopping cyclists riding through the High Street? This is just as dangerous as loose bricks.
