New restaurant to launch alongside Windsor Castle
3:12pm Tue 24th Jun 08:: written by editorialTwo Windsor men have decided to compete with the foreign food invasion by opening a restaurant selling British food - next to Windsor Castle.
Sous-chef Lewis Grimshaw said: "The tourists and locals love it. They find it a wonderful change."
The 25-year-old and pal Kamil Sampson, 24, have leased the former Old King's Head pub in Church Street, behind the Guildhall, where William Shakespeare wrote the Merry Wives of Windsor, and have called it Falstaffs.
The menu includes British favourite's including fish and chips, fish cakes and bangers and mash, as well as the dessert Eton Mess.
Lewis and Kamil have been close friends since boyhood and experimented with cooking in their mums' kitchen when they were only 12 years old.
Their friendship lasted through their college days, where Kamil won a diploma for his culinary skills, and they ran a successful outside catering bhusiness.
Lewis , whose cooking talents developed 'on the job in the kitchen' said: "Our aim is to run a successful chain of restaurants selling British food, which is as good as anything in the world.
"People forget just how good it is."
Lewis, however, does not criticise the other 156 restaurants competing for business in Windsor.
He said: "We are next door to a terrific chinese restaurant and I love Italian food. But sometimes we British forget our own culinary heritage."
Former Windsor restaurateur Jon Moreton-Bell, secretary of the Windsor Chamber of Commerce, said: "This is a brilliant idea and we are delighted for them and wish them very success."
