What Happens In Vegas (12A)

A chance meeting leads to a mismatched couple realising they are in fact perfect for each other against a backdrop of wacky events.
Hang on there’s something awfully familiar about the plot of What Happens in Vegas (12A). It seems to bear a striking resemblance to A Lot Like Love and Just Married – Ashton Kutcher’s other rom coms.
As in those his character Jack is pretty close to how you imagine the actor to be in real life. Yet again this seems to be a vehicle to show just what a fun, yet sexy, and ultimately oh so sensitive manchild Mr Demi Moore is.
His pairing with Cameron Diaz seems a natural one as they are both known for their gangly limbs and goofy sense of humour. Fortunately, her character Joy is fairly straightlaced, meaning her ability to sometimes act and look like a jack-in-the-box is somewhat restrained.
The two collide after suffering crises in their lives and enjoy a night of alcohol-induced bonding. They awake next morning to discover they have been bonded by the holy state of matrimony.
I won’t spoil the plot for you (what little there is) but after the couple get hitched and win $3million on a slot machine they return home for a quickie divorce but instead are given ‘six months hard marriage’.
As part of this they have to attend marriage counselling and the result is they do everything they can to sabotage each other and prove they deserve all the money. This results in the aforementioned dash and a fight in Central Park with baguettes.
There are also the compulsory toilet seat jokes, groin bashing slapstick and of course the best friends Tipper and Hater who provided the required foil for the stars, being less attractive than them and not seeming to have lives of their own.
Sadly, as the duo begin to realise their true feelings so you may begin to realise you’re bored. There is no ‘will they won’t they?’ tension. And surprisingly there was no surprise.
Normally there is at least some kind of twist at the end to keep your attention but it was nowhere to be seen. In fact the climax, which takes place on a beach as the sun is setting, can only be described as incredibly, incredibly cheesy.
I love a happy ending as much as the next person but is there any need lines of ‘you helped me find the real me’?
If you are a major fan of either of these two actors you may enjoy watching them pose their way through a movie which does nothing to stretch their acting ability.
But if you want to exercise your brain rather than encourage it to turn to mush I’d give it a wide swerve.
