DVD - I am Legend

Now this is a story all about how his life got flipped, turned upside down. So I’d like to take a minute just sit right there, I’ll tell you how he became…the last person alive.
No, this is not the Fresh Prince, but self-proclaimed nerd Will Smith returns to save the earth once more.
But there’s a difference - this time, every single person is against him. Wait a minute..., THIS time the difference is he plays an intelligent outsider set with the task of saving the planet and mankind from an evil force pretty much single handed. Ah.
Jokes aside, Smith carries the whole weight of this film on his shoulders. Almost the entire film he is by himself with only the aid of the family dog. And it works.
The story begins with a news story that a cure has been found for cancer. Fast-forward three years and the once-hailed ‘miracle cure’ has mutated and killed 90 per cent of the population, leaving 1 per cent immune and the rest turned into vampire-like creatures known as ‘dark seekers’. Smith has to find a cure for his undead brethren and bring them back to life.
You can truly empathise with Smith’s character, his loneliness and unrelenting optimism that it could all ‘turn out alright’ makes you able to warm to him and actually care if he finds a cure for mankind.
It truly is Smith’s acting that makes this film, the CGI in the film was almost laughable, the Dark Seekers being about as scary and realistic as Dick Dastardly or one of the Muppets.
Despite the annoyingly unconvincing creatures, it’s definitely a film to watch. The DVD extras include an interesting ‘making of’ documentary, looking at the science of viruses and an alternate ending, for all those special features fanatics.
