After a year on hiatus the Burnham Beeches Half Marathon came roaring back with a bang.

The event saw more than 800 runners cross the start line at Caldicott Preparatory School, in Crown Lane, Farnham Royal, on Sunday before tackling a double loop through Burnham Beeches.

Ben Goddard, of UKnetrunner, an online running club, was first to make it back across the line, running home in 1:15:29, almost a minute ahead of Simon Beedell, of Woodford Green Athletics Club.

Alice Hector was the quickest woman and finished ninth overall, with a time of 1:21:40.

The race, which is organised by Burnham Joggers, also looks set to have raised a bumper total for charity, with an initial count predicting a windfall of up to £13,000 to be shared out between the Burnham Youth Centre, the Alzheimer’s Society and homelessness charity Padstones.

Speaking afterwards, race director Dougie Fisher said he though the day had been a 'total success'.

He added: "After the race had to be cancelled last year, we've not had nine months of some very long nights getting it all organised.

"But it's all come together really well today, the feedback has been good and we're really really pleased."

He also promised the event would be back next year, saying it would be 'bigger and better'.
