Windsor RFC coach Paul Britton says his side are back in the title race after edging a tight encounter with fellow promotion challengers Wootton Bassett on Saturday.

The hosts secured their 11th win from 13 games by defeating the Wiltshire side 13-0 at Home Park, closing the gap between the two clubs to just one point.

Windsor are fourth in the Southern Counties North but have a game in hand over second-placed Grove and third-placed Wootton Bassett, while they trail leaders Beaconsfield by six points.

The victory followed Windsor’s second loss of the season, a 27-23 defeat at Grove on Saturday last week.

Britton said: “We said before the game that we needed a win and that’s exactly what happened.

“There are now seven games left and it’s more than likely things are going  down to the business end of the season.

“Things aren’t going to change in terms of the form of the sides and it’s probably going to come down to bonus points.”

Windsor will assess the fitness of a number of players ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) trip to bottom of the table side Marlborough.

Despite Britton’s obvious pleasure at the result, the coach is hoping for an improved performance this weekend.

He said: “We’re still making mistakes but to beat a side near the top of the league without giving them any points, I can’t grumble.

“They made unforced errors and so did we, it was that kind of game but it just came down to us on the day wanting it more in terms of raw bloody-mindedness.”
