World record hopes for Atlantic rowers
A team of five women rowers is homing in on two world records.
Julia Immonen, from Langley, and her teammates hope to arrive in Barbados on Saturday evening after a 3,000 journey across the Atlantic.
She told the Slough Express yesterday, during her 12-hour break from rowing: “The record is 50 days and we hope to do it in 46 days.
“We are all exhausted and excited, have lost a stone in weight each, and have rowed through 30ft waves.
“But we have never felt in danger and have met a school of dolphins.”
They will be met by their families when they reach port.
They departed from the Canaries on December 7 and hope to be the fastest and first all-women crew to complete the crossing.
They also hope to raise one million pounds by supporting people trafficking charities ECPAT UK and the A21 Campaign.
