Three early strikes gave Slough Jets a much-needed cushion in Saturday’s hard-fought 6-3 win at  Peterborough Islanders.

Ben Ealey-Newman opened the Jets account in the first minute and Alan Green doubled their lead on 2.48 before the hosts woke up, and thereafter they provided a much sterner test than in the Jets’ previous three games.

Stas Prokofiev beat Lane when one-on-one after being sent clear by Nathan Darmanin’s timely pass from defence and that lead was held into the first break, despite the visitors weathering a storm of pressure from the home side, and Milton making some outstanding saves.

Robert Ferrara fed Connor Pollard to get the home side on the scoreboard but Josh Ealey-Newman bagged the first of his evening’s brace to re-establish the three-goal buffer.

Seconds later the gloves came off between Matt Webb and Islander Leon Groom after an excessively rough challenge on the Jets’ Martin.

Groom was sent off for an early bath, but Peterborough responded well to being short-handed and scored their second before the interval and a third at 43.44 to narrow the gap.

Alan Green followed Groom off after being dismissed for a heavy boarding incident, but the five minute powerplay – enhanced by a minor call against Andrew Cox – was wasted as the Islanders failed to score, despite having a two-man advantage.

When the sides were both back to full strength Josh Ealey-Newman tapped home after Connor Redmond’s shot.

With the clock ticking down the Islanders pulled their net minder for an extra skater and Ben Ealey-Newman’s clearance from deep skipped off the ice and into the unguarded net to settle the tie.

*The Jets welcome Chelmsford Warriors to the Hangar tomorrow evening (Saturday), 6.30pm face-off.
