Medal haul for Windsor swimmers
Windsor Swimming Club’s national squad returned home from Portugal last weekend with 18 medals having tested themselves against some of the best swimmers from across the continent.
Katie Ambridge gave the team their first medal in Povoa de Varzim by placing third overall in the 200m butterfly in a time of 2mins 16.72secs.
It fell to Lucy Campbell, however, to secure the squad’s first gold medal. Competing in her favoured event, the 400m freestyle, she produced an outstanding final hundred to outdo her rivals and touch in a time of 4.25.80.
As the first session drew to a close Robert Iddiols showed his experience in the 50m freestyle by narrowly defeatinall opposition with a time of 23.70.
This brought the team’s medal tally to three not long before Ambridge similarly shone in the sprint events, winning the girls’ 50m butterfly with a time of 28.60.
Beginning the second day, Campbell again demonstrated her abilities in the distance events by winning the 800m freestyle in a terrific time of 9.01.30, more than 10 seconds in front of her closest competitor.
Soon after, Ambridge won the women’s 100m butterfly in a time of 1.01.30, and, in a quick turnaround, came through to win the 200m individual medley in a time of 2.22.30, marginally bettering Lily Glover, her teammate who touched second with a time of 2.23.10.
The relay events bookended the meet on both days, and Windsor’s men’s and women’s teams gave a solid account of themselves in a highly competitive field.
In the women’s 4x100 medley relay Lucy Camp- bell, Katie Ambridge, Lily Glover, and Lucy Rigby placed third in a time of 4.30.80.
On the second day, the team of Ambridge, Campbell, Glover and Rebecca Dutfield finished second in the 4x100m freestyle in an impressive time of 4.02.00.
