Stavrou targets World Matchplay hat-trick

Debbie Stavrou has set her sights on becoming the first woman to win three World Bowls Matchplay Championships in a row after successfully defending her crown last week.

The 36-year-old, who plays out of Desborough Bowls Club, beat Guernsey’s Alison Merrien in the final at Norfolk’s Potters Leisure Resort for the second successive year to take the trophy.

And she has already turned her attentions to next year’s event and writing her name into the record books.

She said: “It’s amazing to win it two years in a row. I can’t quite believe it. “Obviously I was hoping to do it when the tournament started but you always think that it probably won’t happen.

“But now it has and I want to make it three in a row. No-one has ever done that before so I’ll certainly be going for it.”
