Olympics hosts needed for athletes' family and friends

Olympics2012Hosts are needed to welcome athletes' relatives and friends into their homes during the Olympics.

Christian charity More Than Gold is looking for villagers in Dorney and the surrounding area who can provide free bed and breakfast for one or more people while Olympics and Paralympics competitions are taking place at Dorney Lake.

Competitors' family members, friends, coaches and team officials will take part in the Athlete Family Homestay Programme to avoid soaring hotel costs during the Games.

Hosts will provide accommodation for eight days and help guests access the nearest public transport to the Court Lane venue.

Herman Beetge of More Than Gold gave a presentation on the scheme at an Olympics public meeting at Burnham Park Hall on Monday.

"This is a beautiful area and it is perfectly situated for members involved at Dorney Lake to stay," he said.

The programme, which has been awarded London 2012's Inspire mark, has previously been used at major sporting events including the Olympics and the World Cup.

Ian Barham, Bucks manager for the 2012 Games, added: "Volunteering is key to the Games and hosting a relative of an athlete will really bring it home."
