Frustrating times for Holyport FC boss

Holyport boss Dereck Sweetman.

It's frustrating times at Summerleaze Village as Holyport face the prospect of a ‘lost month’ - four weeks without kicking a football in anger.

Port last played on Saturday, January 21 - when they lost 5-0 to Oxford City Nomads.

This Saturday would mark three weeks without  a game, and with the weather forecast of Arctic-like for the next few days, Port might not play again until the following Saturday -  a full month since they last took to the field.

Port boss Derek Sweetman is as frustrated as his players, but is powerless in the circumstances.

He said: “It’s frustrating, especially as we had lost just one of our last six games. We really wanted to keep the momentum going.

“But that’s gone completely out of the window.”

He added: “It’s also been very difficult to train.

“We haven’t been able to do anything indoors, so we have done some work at the club and some road running, but it’s been pretty minimal really. Not ideal.

“We have not played for three weeks come Saturday. We had a blank in the fixture list followed by last Saturday’s postponement against Wokingham & Emmbrook.

Meanwhile the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy match at Wantage has been postponed four times.

“It was called off on Tuesday not because of a frozen pitch but because when it thawed the pitch became waterlogged.

“We will try again this Tuesday, but the forecast is not good.

“I suspect Saturday’s match at Fairford Town will also be off.”
